The Idyllic Beast

The Idyllic Beast
April 2nd, 1888

“Tommy Savile.”
“Tphantom Ptriumphs! You haven’t been around to one of my shows in a while. Afraid of catching the tommy-bug?”
“I don’t attend your shows as a form of self respect I carry with myself.”
“Now then, what’s that? Since we met you’ve had it out for me.”
“So you have noticed? Unlike everyone else I couldn’t stand you the moment I met you.”
“And why is that, old boy? Ahey? Tell me again. I love this story.”
“Because, sir, I believe you to be a twisted piece of filth. A conman, pedophile and rapist.”
“Eesh! I don’t think I like the sound of them words. Why’d you hate me so?”
“Because you are evil incarnate. You are vile. You get away with it everywhere you go. You have so much and give away so little.”
“Does it make you jealous, old boy? Make you uncomfortable, do I?"
“The only thing I feel is a desire to have you thrown to ravenous dogs. It must have killed you to know I hated you.”
“What’s that now?”
“Everyone you meet instantly falls in love with you. Royalty, celebrities. Little girls.”
“I’m quite aware, I like to talk! What can I say? Now do join me for a brandy!”
“I don’t want brandy!”
“Settle, settle! You’ll faint getting as overactive as you’re gettin’. Come, what’s the real reason you’ve come here? To bother me more?”
“I’ve told you before, I’m not the press."
“Oh, I’m sorry! A detective. And, uhh… what have you found on me, sir?”
“Enough.”
“Well, elaborate! The suspense is making me loose my hardie.”
“Sicko.”
“What was that lad? You better either grab a drink with me or be on your way. The guards don’t trust folks who meet with me just to pace. Go ahead, I’ll sit here while you run through the thick of it. Just be quick.”
“You are a suspect involved in multiple missing people’s cases.”
“Okay.”
“You belong to the three largest secret societies in the country.”
“Go on.”
“You were once a politician.”
“Keep going!”
“You are believed to be heading a cult.”
“And you like to brag and prattle before bringing your prey in, so what? Out with it! If I’m the vile man you believe me to be…”
“How many?”
“What, sir?”
“How many people? How many suffered you?"
“I don’t know what you mean, sir. I’m a right noble man, I am. Respectable. Honest.”
“With a face loved across America. That’s why no one would ever believe you’ve done what you’ve done.”
“That being…?”
“I traversed the criminal underworld. I looked for everything on you. Does the name Richard McCreedy ring a bell?”
“Not in the least bit.”
“Funny, considering your lack of a birth certificate.”
“It was lost, as all folks know, in the fire which took from me my parents.”
“How convenient.”
“Now you think I’d kill my own mommy and daddy!?”
“No. How convenient for a man, who no one can trace, to have no papers even tracing his existence back thirty years. Almost like it was all destroyed in a freak accident. Almost like you were given an opportunity to do what you wanted, under the guise of a blameless personality.”
“I like your theory!”
“Do you.”
“But it’s missing something… Oh, what is it called? Oh, yes… Proof!!”
“…”
“Oh! Wait… I know what this is! This is one of those: you come in, accuse me, I give myself up and you catch it on recording? Or is it: you meet with me, you try to make me feel guilty, so I confess? Well, I’m sorry, but I do not confess to things I do not do. Now I will offer you a drink one last time.”
“I won’t bend to you. I won’t be your buddy. Not even the cops who are after you really want to catch you. They all like you too much.”
“So is the way of the world.”
“Well in this case the world is wrong.”
“Why did you stop the recorder? And where did you get that pistol?”
“I thought this over again and again in my head, Savile.”
“Who the hell do you think you are?”
“The man who’s going to save hundreds of potential victims.”
“No. You are detective. You don’t shoot people.”
“I do what need be done. I serve the people.”
“Now then… vigilantism. Not your style. Too bad you’ll be carried out of here by your balls before you’ve had a chance to run. BARTELL!! RUFUS!!”
“…”
“BARTELL!! RUFUS!!”
“Your guards were called away.”
“What…?”
“I thought it would be distracting, having witnesses and all.”
“By god, you are serious, aren’t you?”
“Quite.”
“So this is it. You think I’m a bad man and so you want to shoot me down in my own office… What cruel times we live in—"
“—I KNOW YOU!! I’VE SEEN WHAT YOU’VE DONE!! Only I can stop you.”
“THEN PULL THE TRIGGER!! You’ve been rattling around killing me in your head since the moment you arrived here. Worthless. You can’t even shoot a a rapist. You can point that thing at me all day, but nothing will change until that bullet finds its way into my head. So do it.”
“I’m not falling for it.”
“For what?”
“You insinuating that you want me to shoot you.”
“But I want you to shoot me!”
“No, you don’t. This is what you do. You lie, create ticks that get into people. Bend their way of thinking… but I’m not most people. And your psycho-babble bullshit doesn’t work on me.”
“THEN PULL THE GOD-DAMNED TRIGGER!!”
“…huh.”
“You did it… You really did it?”
“…”
“I didn’t think you could do it…”
“How are you still alive?”
“A revolver round to the lower chest… the slug is in me. Only bleeding out’ll take me now. So I guess we have a few minutes.”
“I guess we do.”
“Gonna make it look like a suicide?”
“No. At first I was considering that, but then I figured it’d be too cliche’.”
“So what are you going with?”
“A break in. A crazed fan. It’s not up to me. The press will decide.”
“Now then, since it’s over I’m sure, even with the possibility of capture lingering over your head, you are satisfied.”
“I am.”
“Well, that’s nice.”
“You were the only one I’ve ever had to kill. The only one, so far, that couldn’t be caught. No matter what I did.”
“That’s because I was loved. Get people to adore you, even royals, and everything you do will be ignored for the image of a clean face under an idol’s spotlight. I regret nothing.”
“Your cult will fall apart.”
“I’m in euphoria.”
“Your victims will rejoice.”
“Utter joy.”
“Your legacy will be found out when your estate is gutted and they find everything. All the pictures. The movies.”
“Your point is? You saved me detective. I am the greatest thief of innocents to have ever blessed the modern age! My victims are in the thousands, and not a one will speak out against me as long as I live. Now… I drift gently into eternal sleep, free from punishment. You’ve saved me…. you…”

“I saved there people. And after they find what you’ve always done with your free time I wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped the search for your killer altogether. You’re the last one, Savile. My first and only murder.”
