#1. The Devil’s Tree

There stands a tree within Bernards Township, where it is said that a farmer hung himself after killing his wife and children. It is said that any harm that befalls the tree will return upon the vandal, ten fold. It is also speculated that a strange heat resides within the bark of the tree, having some believe that it has ties to hell.

#2. Clifton

It is believed that the Clifton Sewer Tunnels hold an actual portal to hell which is guarded by a demonic entity by the name of Red-Eyed Mike. It is unheard of if Mike has ever harmed anyone, or rather, just appeared to ward off those who seek the entrance to damnation.

#3. Captain Kidd

In Barnegat Bay there have been sightings of the fabled sailor, Captain Kidd, who seeks his treasure, buried somewhere on the shore. He is a headless man in an old-styled outfit who is sometimes seen, from a distance, walking along the shore beside the horrific Jersey Devil.

#4. The Black Dog

Within the beaches and forests of Absecon Island lives the harmless spirit of a black dog. Believed to be the ghost of a mutt killed upon an old sunken ship, off the coast of Barnegat Bay where it is said it also resides.

#5. The Gold-Haired Girl

This legend speaks of a girl morning the loss of a loved one at sea. She is often depicted as having the devil sitting beside her, living in hell while being allowed time to return to the shores of Barnegat and look out at the sea, searching for her love who will never return.

#6. Atco Ghost

At the end of an unfinished road, connected to Route 30, there lies the legend of a boy with his basket ball; The victim of a hit and run. Now, it is believed that returning to the road and preforming a U-turn, as the drunken driver who had killed the boy had done, it is said you will see the ghost of the boy, ball in hand, crossing the road.

#7. The White Stag

This myth tells of the fabled existence of a white deer that is said to bring good luck and prevent disasters. It’s appearance is extremely rare, and it was supposed to have been the preventer of accidents from Batsto River to Quaker Bridge.

#8. A Pine Barrens Legend

The Legend of James Still tells of an African American doctor, deemed unfit to practice his trade due to his race. In some tellings of the legend he’d been lynched, while in others he’d lived a full life, dying peacefully at an old age. In any case, it is believed that his spirit still walks the Pine Barrens, aiding the injured living who might be so lucky as to stumble upon his unresting soul.

#9. The Ghost Train of Newark


During the tenth of every month, when the clock strikes midnight at Newark’s Broad Street Station, a ghost train passes through, aways on time; and driven by the efforts of a deceased conductor. It is a transportation vessel that can take you to the afterlife, should you decided to board it.
